Had you asked me at the time, I’d have disavowed my father’s religion completely, but that didn’t mean I didn’t fear it. What if heaven and hell were real? I tried to imagine what it would take to keep me from that burning for eternity and it seemed unlikely that it was a matter of prayers and church. I had so many questions: why did we follow the New Testament, but not the Old? Why did God condemn people from other times and other places to die: the Mayans, the Anasazi, the tribes of Peru and Ecuador? It wasn’t simply that the Bible seemed unfair to me, it was that God’s rules seemed arbitrary. Why this person and not that one? Why AIDS and not malaria? Why the United States and not Gambia? My neighbor: He was kind. He was funny. He liked mud masks and jeans with a crease. He never asked us to take off our shirts, never asked us to give him a blow job, never went where he wasn’t invited. Why condemn him to burn in an eternal lake of fire?
